Mitini Nepal organized an interaction session with chief media editors on marriage equality including the issues of lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons at March 31, 2023 in Bagmati Province, Dhulikhel supported by the Global Fund for Women. The program focused primarily on various economic, social, political, educational and identity status, challenges and current legal provisions that addresses women within sexual and gender minority communities. The program commenced with the welcome remarks and presentation sharing by Executive Director of Mitini Nepal Sarita K.C. including Mitini intro, mission, vision, terminology used for sexual and gender minority communities, current status of the community, challenges and achievements. During the session, Sabin Shrestha, advocate from FWLD (Forum for Women, Law and Development) shared his statement on marriage equality that the community has been deprived of the right to marriage due to lack of use of gender-neutral words in the place related to marriage. On the occasion, President of Mitini Nepal Laxmi Ghalan shared the story of discrimination and struggle faced among the participants. Ghalan said that the media has been playing an important role in the movement for sexual and gender minorities and the media is the agent of change to end the discrimination against the community. Senior media personalities provided suggestions and expressed their opinions and commitment as experts in the discussion program. They stressed on the need for media to be constantly vigilant on community issues and for this, various awareness and training programs as well as guidelines for terminology to cover the community should be formed.
